Gloria Okon — a real, documented case. She was arrested at Aminu Kano International Airport on 22 April 1985 for allegedly smuggling roughly 56 grammes of suspected heroin, and died six days later in custody, officially of food poisoning. She never named names before dying. That mysterious death is the seed of everything else — rumour held she was a drug courier for powerful figures and died because she was about to implicate IBB and his wife, Maryam. A competing rumour claimed she didn’t die at all but was secretly flown to London, with speculation that Dele Giwa had traced her there before his assassination.
Babangida — allegations here run two tracks, both unproven:- A public intellectual has claimed Babangida faced accusations of drug dealing and was nearly sacked from the army by Buhari for it, just before the coup that removed Buhari. Buhari himself alleged his overthrow was driven by his hard line against corruption and drug trafficking among top military brass – these are decades-old political claims, not court findings. On Gloria Okon specifically: Nigeria’s Oputa Panel documented petitions alleging a Giwa-Okon-Maryam Babangida connection but issued no judicial finding on them. And notably — Newswatch co-founder Yakubu Mohammed has since publicly said Giwa was never actually working on a Gloria Okon story at all, which undercuts a load-bearing piece of the whole legend. Babangida himself has repeatedly and directly denied any involvement in Giwa’s death.
Abiola — the drug allegation is thinner and more geopolitical in origin. The claim, sourced to commentator Gary Busch, is that Western intelligence circulated information in London and Lagos about Abiola’s alleged ties to the drugs trade, and that this — not his politics — was why the US opposed his presidency and why the Nigerian military was pressured to block his candidacy. This has never been substantiated with evidence; it’s cited mostly to explain why June 12 was annulled, not as a proven fact about Abiola.
Bottom line: none of this is settled. Okon’s death is a documented, unresolved mystery. The Babangida and Abiola drug links are attributions built on rumour, unverified intelligence claims, and a panel that recorded allegations without ruling on them. Worth flagging too — one of the key threads (Giwa investigating Okon) has been directly contradicted by someone who was actually there.
