FFK v Badenoch

Kemi Badenoch’s Historic Win: A Call for Celebration and Reflection

#KemiBadenoch’s election as Leader of the UK Conservative Party and Leader of His Majesty’s Opposition is a milestone worthy of celebration. Born in London to Nigerian parents, Badenoch’s remarkable background and achievements make her an inspiration to many. Her father, Femi Adegoke, a GP and activist, and her mother, Feyi, a physiology professor, instilled in her the values of hard work and determination.

However, not everyone shares the enthusiasm. #FemiFani-Kayode’s criticism of Badenoch’s stance on Nigerian heritage has been labeled “fake outrage” by Dr. Olusola Oni. Oni argues that Fani-Kayode’s hypocrisy is evident in his acceptance of Nigeria’s poor conditions while condemning Badenoch’s desire to keep those problems out of the UK.

Criticisms and Controversies

Fani-Kayode’s Hypocrisy

  1. Selective Outrage: Fani-Kayode criticizes Badenoch for not embracing her Nigerian heritage while ignoring Nigeria’s own shortcomings.
  2. Double Standards: He accepts Nigeria’s insecurity and lack of amenities but expects Badenoch to welcome those problems in the UK.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa’s Overstep

  1. Lack of Authority: Dabiri-Erewa, Nigeria’s Special Adviser on Diaspora, has no mandate to demand meetings with Badenoch.
  2. Baseless Criticism: Her criticism of Badenoch’s “Nigerianess” is self-aggrandizing and without merit.

A Call for Meaningful Discussions

Rather than criticizing Badenoch, Fani-Kayode and Dabiri-Erewa should focus on Nigeria’s development. Intelligent discussions with Badenoch should center on:

  1. Yorubaland’s Sovereignty: Recognizing Yorubaland’s statehood status, confirmed by the 1888 Britain-Yorubaland Treaty.
  2. Historical Treaty Obligations: Addressing Britain’s responsibilities toward Yorubaland.
  3. Meaningful Reparations: Providing targeted compensation for the Yoruba people, disproportionately enslaved during the Transatlantic slave trade.

Badenoch’s achievement is a testament to her dedication and perseverance. Rather than criticizing her, we should celebrate her success and engage in constructive dialogue about the issues that truly matter.
