Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi State, has been granted bail in the sum of ₦500 million by Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Maitama, Abuja. This comes after Bello apologized for failing to appear in court for his trial, facing a 19-count charge bordering on criminal breach of trust and money laundering.
The charges allege that Bello conspired with others to convert the sum of ₦80,246,470,089.88, which is part of the proceeds of his unlawful activity, to wit: criminal breach of trust. Bello pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The bail conditions require Bello to provide two sureties in like sum, who must own properties within the court’s jurisdiction. He is also required to deposit his international passport with the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court, submit recent passport photographs, and swear an affidavit of means.
Until the bail conditions are met, Justice Nwite ordered that Bello be remanded at the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Kuje. The trial has been adjourned to February 24 and 28, as well as March 6 and 7, 2025, for continuation.
Meanwhile, some unreliable sources are claiming most of the billions in question were blown in the 2023 presidential campaign in which Tinubu emerged as winner. While some sources claim Yahaya Bello is threatening to sue the website that disparaged him as a major financier of Tinubu’s billion-dollar campaign.
